Taiwan's Diplomacy

Taiwan's complex informal diplomatic practices and the forces behind them have brought both successes and failures in Taiwan's relations with former Yugoslavia and its successor states. Despite its short triumph with Macedonia, Taiwanese diplomacy did not succeed in accomplishing its objectives in post-Yugoslav states. The study has attempted to scrutinize the major reasons behind the setbacks and opportunities. It provides a systematic analysis of major external and internal influences that have shaped Taipei's diplomatic endeavors in the post-Yugoslav region by employing four basic levels of analysis - the system, the state, the societal and the individual level. This book represents one of the first endeavors at conducting a detailed study of Taiwan's relations with the former Yugoslav republics. Accordingly, it will greatly contribute to scholarship and practice in Taiwan and China studies, diplomacy and international relations.
