In her search for connection, meaning and understanding, she found that food, in the way it is bound to our identity and language, could give a sense of belonging, but could also constrict, and enforce generalisations. As she threw herself into research on the Chinese food of her heritage, she found herself pushing back against tired tropes and clichés, and the ways in which diaspora identity has been commodified for public consumption. And she began to write.
