Teaching Secondary Mathematics as if the Planet Matters

We are surrounded by images and warnings of impending environmental disaster. The threats posed by climate change, mass extinction, economic depression and other global challenges are regularly reported, discussed and debated. People have access to huge amounts of information, from the most rigorous scientific data to the most malicious misinformation. And all of it depends on mathematics. Teaching Mathematics as if the Planet Matters provides detailed and practical advice on how Mathematics teachers can develop approaches to curriculum and learning which help students understand the nature of the contemporary world. It sets out a model for teaching and learning that allows teachers to examine existing approaches to teaching and draw upon the insights of mathematics as a discipline to help students relate classroom mathematics to global issues such as climate change, the economy, Human rights, food supplies and biodiversity.
