Jake Ambler's newest mission, on the twilight world of Nidus, has him manning a flak cannon against the violent Seyles, giant dragonfly-like creatures that are attempting to get to the Apothikon, a mysterious creature that gestates in a pit and draws creatures to their doom. In between attacks, Jake must unravel the riddle of what the Apothikon is, what destroyed its defenses, and what will happen when it finally emerges from its watery womb. As the warlike and feudalistic Seyles try to drag him into their suicidal conflicts, and the attacks on the Apothikon's defenses continue, Jake has only a few friends, old and new, to help him survive and save the planet before the devastation of a once-a-century event causes the kingdom-and possibly the world-to collapse!
