My Early Education

In 1931, Hu Shih was turning forty, and began writing his autobiography. In a language simple and plain - the vernacular style he had advocated in 1917 for the New Culture Movement - he remembered his childhood. Fatherless from an early age, Hu Shih received an excellent education in Jixi, Anhui, thanks to his mother's adamant teaching.
