(Author) Harvey Whitehouseהתעניינותי בהיסטוריה של ההתיישבות בנגב החלה לפני מעל חמישים שנה, לאחר שירות צבאי בנח"ל, סיום לימודי התואר הראשון בהיסטוריה של המזרח-התיכון וגיאוגרפיה, והקמת משפחתי. כתבתי במסגרת לימודי לתואר השני תיזה על "ההתיישבות החלוצית היהודית בנגב, 1880 – 1948". התיזה התפרסמה כספר בהוצאת הספרים של הקיבוץ המאוחד בשנת 1974 ובמהדורה שניה בהוצאת אריאל בשנת 2002. בנוסף, פרסמתי בשנת 2003 בהוצאת אריאל ספר על "המצפות הראשונות בנגב". בספריי ייחסתי חשיבות רבה, מעבר לעבודה בארכיונים (חלקם לא ידועים) ולאיתור חומר רלבנטי שהופיע בדפוס, לעבודת שדה אשר כללה בדיקת היישובים והאתרים בשטח והחומר הארכיוני שבידם, מפגש וראיונות בלתי אמצעיים עם אנשי המשקים החקלאיים שנטלו חלק בייסוד היישובים בנגב ועם אנשי מפתח שפעלו לקידום רכישת הקרקעות וההתיישבות היהודית בנגב בתקופת המחקר.
