The focus of this book is on political life in Anglo-Saxon and early Norman England, and with the highest levels of English society-the king, the royal family and the elites-though one hitherto unpublished essay treats the interactions of king, lord and community across a broad social spectrum. The author's concern is with issues of family, succession, inheritance and land holding, and to restore a place for women in the history of the period.
